Getting ready for your 2025 Self Assessment tax return

Getting ready for your 2025 Self Assessment tax return

The tax year ended on 5 April 2025, which means it’s time to start preparing for your next Self Assessment Tax Return. Whether you file your own return or work with an accountant, submitting the right information in good time helps keep things smooth and stress-free.

When is the Self Assessment tax return deadline?

The official deadline for submitting your 2024/25 Self Assessment tax return is 31 January 2026. This applies whether you’re filing it yourself or through an agent. While that may feel a long way off, leaving it too late can cause unnecessary stress – or worse, result in penalties for late filing.

What period does it cover?

Your tax return must include all relevant income and gains earned between:

6 April 2024 and 5 April 2025

This applies to income from employment, self-employment, rental properties, dividends, pensions, savings, and any other sources. If you’ve started earning from something new in this period – like a second job or rental income – it will need to be included too.

Getting Organised: What to Provide

You will need to provide details of all sources of income for the 2024/25 tax year, including any new income streams that may have arisen during the period. To help you pull everything together, we’ve created a checklist of potential income sources. You can use this as a reference to make sure nothing is overlooked. It’s a good idea to start gathering your paperwork now, rather than leaving it until the last minute.

For R J Francis & Co clients

If you’re a client of R J Francis & Co, we ask that you provide your complete information by 31 October 2025. This gives us enough time to prepare your return, advise you of any tax due, and make sure everything is submitted to HMRC well before the deadline.

Our address can be found in the footer, or here on our Contact Us page.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

Missing the 31 January Self Assessment deadline can result in penalties from HMRC. Even if you don’t owe any tax, you can still be fined for failing to submit your return on time. That’s why we recommend preparing early and reaching out for support if you need it.
